The incident happened in Putnam County on Wednesday, March 15, when firefighters and Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps members responded to a vehicle rollover in Carmel on Stoneleigh Avenue near Putnam Hospital, firefighters announced on Saturday, March 18.
According to the Carmel Fire Department, first responders found that the driver had escaped from the rolled-over car themselves. They then evaluated the driver for injuries.
While firefighters were operating at the crash scene, one member was hit by a vehicle passing by and suffered minor injuries. This member was then treated by ambulance personnel that was already at the scene.
After the incident, the fire department asked members of the public to be more careful when driving by emergency crews.
"We urge everyone to please slow down for your safety and ours!" members of the department said on social media.
"Please slow down and move over for emergency vehicles that have stopped and activated their warning lights. We’re all out there to keep you safe. We ask you to help keep us safe in return," the department added.
